This study uses a systematic review methodology to analyse and assess recent evidence on the underlying mechanisms that underpin the intergenerational transmission of poverty and well-being. The research reveals a substantial degree of persistence of poverty across generations. That is, the families and the context in which children are born largely determine the opportunities that they will face throughout their lifetime. Intergenerational poverty manifests itself in the form of lower health and education attainment, and an increased likelihood of being poor (low future income).
